Emma Bell appointed to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf鈥檚 Chair in Leadership

Emma Bell has been appointed H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf鈥檚 Chaired Professor in Leadership at the 果冻视频 (SSE). A leading researcher in leadership and organisation studies, Professor Bell will focus on how leadership is performed, perceived, and shaped by societal expectations.

Professor Bell’s research looks at leadership not just as a role, but as a social performance that is closely watched by others – whether in the workplace, in politics, or on social media. She is interested in how leadership is shaped by culture, power, and emotions, and how our ideas about leaders change over time.

"What interests me is that leadership exists at multiple levels. The way we see leadership in society – through politics, business, or media – shapes what we expect from leaders in organizations. In turn, this influences how leadership is performed. A key challenge in leadership education is to widen our expectations of what leadership is and how it can be done," says Professor Bell.

Her recent research also examines craft in organisations, practices of making things that can become a powerful tool for creativity, resistance, fostering community and alternative ways of enacting change.

Power takes many forms

At a time when political and corporate leadership is under intense scrutiny, Professor Bell sees a need to analyze how leadership and power function. Polarization, declining public trust, and rapid societal change are all reshaping what people expect from leaders – and what leaders expect from themselves.

"Leadership is always about power, but power takes many forms. The way leadership is practiced and interpreted today reflects deeper societal trends. By studying leadership critically, we can better understand both its potential and its risks," she says.

Her work has taken her around the world, studying leadership and workplace culture in India, the UK and the US. She has published widely in international scholarly journals including Journal of Business Ethics, Academy of Management Learning & Education and Organization Studies and is the lead author of a leading textbook on research methods which is widely used by business students across the world. She is currently a visiting professor at Hanken School of 果冻视频 and is working on research about belonging, intimacy and loneliness at work, as issues that affect leadership and organizational culture.

A professorship focused on the next generation of leaders

H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Chaired Professorship in Leadership was established in 2023 to honor the King’s 50 years on the throne. It was funded through a donation from the Swedish business community, including Carl Bennet AB, the Erling-Persson Foundation, the Schörling Family Foundation, PO Söderberg, the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation, Stena AB, the Torsten Söderberg Foundation, and the Wallenberg Foundations. The goal is to deepen knowledge about leadership, particularly in relation to young people’s engagement in organizations and society.

SSE President Lars Strannegård welcomes the appointment, highlighting its significance for the school’s leadership research.

"Emma Bell brings a wealth of knowledge and fresh perspectives on leadership, culture, and organizational dynamics. Her work will be instrumental in broadening our understanding of leadership at a time when society’s expectations of leaders are shifting. We are delighted to have her at SSE."

With this appointment, SSE strengthens its position as a leading institution for leadership studies, bridging academic research with real-world leadership challenges.
